2011 Zinfandel
The vineyard in Lodi, California, where this wine was grown was originally planted in 1896, and indeed deserves and qualifies for the term “Ancient Vine” Zinfandel. The vines are head-trained without the need for a trellis in the traditional “Old California” style, and produce very low yields with resulting concentration and flavor intensity.
The wine is very rich and full bodied, with aromas of blackberry, cherry and plum along with a classic “cigar box” aroma of cedar and sweet tobacco. In the mouth these flavors are intense and concentrated, and provide a long and bold finish with enough stuffing to keep one warm on a long and cold winter evening. This wine pairs perfectly with almost all hearty fare; beef, lamb or game, and is great with tomato-based sauces.
