2015 Four Oak Red
The 2015 Four Oak Red is the second vintage for us at Chankaska. Josie and I hand select the best barrels from each lot to make up the Four Oak Red. We combine the best of several appellations in California: Napa Valley, Lake County and Lodi.
I go to the Napa Valley every year to source the best fruit for the blend. The Four Oak Red is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Merlot and in 2015 we added a 5th grape, Frontenac. The lots were fermented separately and then blended in August of 2016 and sent back to barrel for another 8 months. The Four Oak Red was Cross Flow Filtered before going into the bottle. It is a wine that tastes great right out of the bottle but will continue to age for another 8 to 10 years.
The Petite Sirah gives it a dark, smoked cherry component while the Frontenac lends the acidity it needs for a long life in bottle. The smokiness is carried onto the palate, where the firm tannins of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot pull it all together.
It would make an ideal pairing with a hearty Ragu or beef burgundy.
