2013 MINNESOTA MARQUETTE

The fruit for this Marquette was sourced from six different Minnesota grape growers, all within 50 miles of our winery. Each of our growers farm to the highest standards and in 2013, Mother Nature helped in making this a near-perfect vintage. A long, dry summer allowed the fruit to ripen to full maturity. All fruit was picked at the crack of sunrise by hand and delivered immediately to the winery.

Once the fruit arrived at the winery, it was hand-sorted and fermented in separate small lots. A four week fermentation allowed for full extraction of color and tannins. The wine was lightly pressed off the skins and barreled down for the winter in October. After almost eight months in barrel, the Marquette was blended with a portion of Merlot to help soften the acidity that Marquette is known for.

Aromas of black cherry and cedar dominate the nose. With more aromas of red currant and loamy black olives leading to plush, complex flavors of ripe plum, fig and smoked meats. The finish is persistent with firm tannins that suggest this wine will continue to improve for the next three to five years.

2012 MARQUETTE RESERVE

GOLD MEDAL 2013 COLD CLIMATE WINE COMPETITION, MINNESOTA

This wine is without a doubt the finest red wine yet produced at Chankaska; a brilliant follow-up to the 2011 Reserve. It was created from the very best lots of fruit available in Minnesota including our own Estate Vineyard fruit. The wine is again blended with a small percentage of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and was aged for nine months in second-year Minnesota grown oak barrels and neutral French oak. No new oak was used in the aging.

The wine is everything a great red wine should be; it is rich, complex, deeply aromatic, full-bodied, dry, and has a delightfully intense and long finish. Primary fruit aromas are black cherry and mulberry, with hints of “forest floor” (wet leaves, earth and mushrooms), and hints of spice (cinnamon, clove, and allspice) from the second-year Minnesota oak barrels.

Already a Gold-medal winner at the 2013 International Cold Climate Wine Competition, the wine will only get better, richer, smoother and more complex as it ages in the bottle.

BLEND: Marquette, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon

BARREL AGING: 9 months in second-year Minnesota grown oak and neutral French oak, no new oak.

The Lone Oak Tree Vineyard is owned and cared for by the Curry family near Amboy, MN. The first time I walked the vineyard, I was enchanted by its perfection. This was obviously a well-cared for and deeply impressive plot of Marquette vines. The patriarch, Les Curry, gave most of the credit to the constant, loving attention and hand-work done by his wife Twyla. Her hands move deftly along the vines, pulling leaves and shoots, adjusting canes and worrying the wine into being. I knew right then that this particular lot of grapes was going to make a superior wine. I was not disappointed for when the fruit was delivered, I was convinced it was the prettiest load of grapes I was ever likely to work with.

The choice was made early on not to blend this wine with any other in order to show off its purity and remarkable character. The wine was fermented slowly and at cool temperature and produced a Marquette wine of great distinction. Bright black cherry fruit dominates with lovely side notes of lavender, mushrooms, wet earth, wood smoke and spice. The wine is powerful, intense, concentrated, and shows great depth even at this early stage. It is like the “Black Knight”: quiet, bold, brooding and strong, a wolf without sheep’s clothing. This wine is Pure. True. Unblended.

2012 AMERICAN MARQUETTE

RETIRED

SILVER MEDAL 2013 SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITION, CALIFORNIA
SILVER MEDAL 2013 COLD CLIMATE WINE COMPETITION, MINNESOTA

This, our second edition of our award winning “American” Marquette, was primarily grown in a well-established family vineyard in Viroqua, Wisconsin, and has a small amount of California Petite Sirah blended in for increased concentration, weight, and complexity. It is similar to the 2011 version, but shows additional depth and sophistication in its structure.

The wine is medium bodied and quite rich for its youth. Aromas of black cherry, mulberry, and pomegranate stand out, with hints of fresh leather and wood-smoke from ageing in Minnesota-grown oak barrels. There is also a slightly sweet and earthy aroma of damp-leaves in autumn.

The wine is powerful, but not overly so, it is firm, but not hard or angular, it will continue to soften and gain complexity as it ages in the bottle. This wine will pair perfectly with an array of grilled-foods, pizza, tomato-based pastas and hearty soups or stews.

SILVER MEDAL 2013 COLD CLIMATE WINE COMPETITION, MINNESOTA

The fruit for this Marquette was sourced from eight different Minnesota grape growers, mostly within 30 miles of our winery. These are small family owned and operated vineyards, all the work is done with hands and hearts of individuals and multi-generational family teams. Some of these vineyards have as few as 300 vines, while others may have 3,000.

Processed and vinted in separate small batches, this Marquette came together slowly by multiple tasting trials to achieve the final “cuvee”, or blend, with a small portion of California Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah added to round-out the mix.

Aromas of black cherry and mulberry dominate with harmonious suggestions of strawberry jam, wood smoke and tanned leather. In the mouth the wine is medium bodied, rich and smooth, with bright “chunky” tannins that will soften with additional time in the bottle. The finish is rather bright and lively, and leaves the mouth “watering” for more.

Our very first release of the cold-climate grape Marquette is a fruity and delicious medium-bodied red wine in the style of the French “Beaujolais” wines.  Very dark in color, the wine is almost purple and has sweet aromas of various red fruits like plum, black cherry and mulberry predominating, while secondary aromas of brown sugar and sweet spices create a flavorful and long-lasting taste sensation. The wine is rich and mouth coating, intensely fruity, with a very pleasant and pure finish. Paired with grilled meats, pizza, hearty stews or tomato-based pastas, our Marquette will amply provide the evidence needed to believe that delicious red wine can in fact be grown in Minnesota.

This, our very first Marquette Reserve, is the reason I came all the way from California to make wine. These new U of M grapes are nothing short of a miracle, and it is my personal delight to share with the world that it is possible to make fine dry red wine in Minnesota, from grapes grown in Minnesota.

This 2011 Minnesota Marquette Reserve comes on strong and has surprising weight and complexity. Blended with a dollop of both California grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to add balance and complexity, the wine is rich, bold and inviting. Aromas of deep black cherry and mulberry dominate, while sweet and peppery spices play around the sensory edges, along with floral notes such as rose petal and violet. In the mouth the wine has an undeniable “lift” of natural acidity as in sweet and tart berry fruits, which combine seamlessly to make the wine an ideal pairing with foods of all types, especially roasted or grilled meats and vegetables, root vegetables and strong aged cheeses.
