This, our second edition of our award winning “American” Marquette, was primarily grown in a well-established family vineyard in Viroqua, Wisconsin, and has a small amount of California Petite Sirah blended in for increased concentration, weight, and complexity. It is similar to the 2011 version, but shows additional depth and sophistication in its structure.
The wine is medium bodied and quite rich for its youth. Aromas of black cherry, mulberry, and pomegranate stand out, with hints of fresh leather and wood-smoke from ageing in Minnesota-grown oak barrels. There is also a slightly sweet and earthy aroma of damp-leaves in autumn.
The wine is powerful, but not overly so, it is firm, but not hard or angular, it will continue to soften and gain complexity as it ages in the bottle. This wine will pair perfectly with an array of grilled-foods, pizza, tomato-based pastas and hearty soups or stews.

The fruit for this Marquette was sourced from eight different Minnesota grape growers, mostly within 30 miles of our winery. These are small family owned and operated vineyards, all the work is done with hands and hearts of individuals and multi-generational family teams. Some of these vineyards have as few as 300 vines, while others may have 3,000.
Processed and vinted in separate small batches, this Marquette came together slowly by multiple tasting trials to achieve the final “cuvee”, or blend, with a small portion of California Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah added to round-out the mix.
Aromas of black cherry and mulberry dominate with harmonious suggestions of strawberry jam, wood smoke and tanned leather. In the mouth the wine is medium bodied, rich and smooth, with bright “chunky” tannins that will soften with additional time in the bottle. The finish is rather bright and lively, and leaves the mouth “watering” for more.

RETIRED
Our very first release of the cold-climate grape Marquette is a fruity and delicious medium-bodied red wine in the style of the French “Beaujolais” wines. Very dark in color, the wine is almost purple and has sweet aromas of various red fruits like plum, black cherry and mulberry predominating, while secondary aromas of brown sugar and sweet spices create a flavorful and long-lasting taste sensation. The wine is rich and mouth coating, intensely fruity, with a very pleasant and pure finish. Paired with grilled meats, pizza, hearty stews or tomato-based pastas, our Marquette will amply provide the evidence needed to believe that delicious red wine can in fact be grown in Minnesota.

RETIRED
This, our very first Marquette Reserve, is the reason I came all the way from California to make wine. These new U of M grapes are nothing short of a miracle, and it is my personal delight to share with the world that it is possible to make fine dry red wine in Minnesota, from grapes grown in Minnesota.
This 2011 Minnesota Marquette Reserve comes on strong and has surprising weight and complexity. Blended with a dollop of both California grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to add balance and complexity, the wine is rich, bold and inviting. Aromas of deep black cherry and mulberry dominate, while sweet and peppery spices play around the sensory edges, along with floral notes such as rose petal and violet. In the mouth the wine has an undeniable “lift” of natural acidity as in sweet and tart berry fruits, which combine seamlessly to make the wine an ideal pairing with foods of all types, especially roasted or grilled meats and vegetables, root vegetables and strong aged cheeses.
